One day，king hui of Liang met Mencius and said

有一天，杨惠王遇到孟子，说是：

“看看邻国的政治有多糟糕！

When they govern their States，they never think of the people。

他们治理国家，不关心百姓！

But when there is a flood in he nei，I move the victims of the calamity to Hedong。

而且，每当河西发生灾害时，我就把灾民转移到河东。

When there is a calamity in Hedong，I move the people there to he nei。

河东遭遇了灾难，我又把灾民转移到了河西。

I also allocate them food for calamity relief。

调拨粮食救济了他们。为了统治国家。

I have really done my best to govern my country。'

我尽力了。”。

As Mencius heard this，he nodded in agreement。

孟子听了惠王的话，点头表示赞成。

King Hui of Liang went on to say:

杨惠王接着说：

yet my population has not increased and our neighbouring countries ' population has not decreased .

“可是，我的百姓人数没有增加，邻国的百姓人数也没有减少！

The defeated soldiers，throwing away their helmets and armour，flee for their lives。

战败的士兵丢掉盔甲，抱头逃跑了。其中部分3763人逃跑了50步，停止了。

some of them flee 50 steps and then stop，while others flee 100 steps and stop。

一些3763人逃了100步，停下了。

Then，those who flee 50 steps laugh at those who flee 100 steps for their cowardice .

这时嘲笑逃跑50步的3763，逃跑100步的3763胆小的死亡。

of course not . no matter whether they flee 50 steps or 100 steps，they are deserters just the same。'

“当然不是，要么逃50步，要么逃100步，同样是逃兵！”

Mencius smiled and said:

孟子笑着说：

Your majesty，since you understand this truth，you can not expect your population to be larger than that of your neighbouring countries

“大王，您明白这个道理，您也不要希望您的人民比邻国多。”
