Sociolinguistics Language Variation and Change

The Department of Languages and Linguistics is proud to be able to offer two (2) Scholarships to research candidates interested in the field of Linguistics, with a focus on Language Variation and Change.Expressions of interest from students planning to work in one of the two following areas are encouraged:- Variation and change in Australian English, with a focus on ethnicity;- Variation and change in a community language spoken in Australia (e.g. Chinese, Greek, Italian, Vietnamese).Candidates from traditionally under-represented groups and with non-standard backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply as part of an effort to further diversity in Linguistics at La Trobe University.BenefitsBenefits of the scholarship include:- a La Trobe Research Scholarship for three years and six months, with - a value of $27,082.00 per annum, to support your living costs [2018 rates]- a fee-relief scholarship (LTUFFRS) for four years to undertake a PhD at La Trobe University (international applicants only)- opportunities to work with La Trobe’s outstanding researchers and access to our suite of professional development programs- affiliation with the Centre for Research on Language Diversity.Eligibility CriteriaTo be eligible, you need to have an Australian Bachelor’s degree with honours year at an H1 standard, or approved international equivalent, or relevant compensating experience.Value: $27,082 per annum, plus fee-relief scholarship for four years for international applicants.How to ApplyIf you wish to apply for a Scholarship, follow these steps:- review details on how to apply for candidature at: latrobe.edu.au/research/future- successful applicants will work under the supervision of Professor James Walker, and so contact should be made directly with him;- after receiving in-principle agreement for supervision, promptly complete and submit your application to the La Trobe Graduate Research School (admissions.grs latrobe.edu.au) for admission into La Trobe’s PhD program, indicating that you wish to be considered for a Scholarship in Language Variation and Change.The University will carefully review your application and consider you for the Scholarship. You will be advised of an outcome promptly.
