It’s a moving story about how Billy, a seven-year-old boy conquered his worries about not being smart enough for second grade. What happened to him? While seeing the statue of the Jolly Green Giant in Blue Earth, Minnesota, a sudden gust lifted his cap and he stepped onto the middle rung of the guardrail to catch it without thinking. As a result, he fell to the pavement below.

Fortunately, he was sent to hospital instantly and there was nothing serious except for a lump on his head. He even proudly showed his lump to his best friend, Ned. And he called his grandmother on the phone to tell her about the incident. What a cute boy! But several nights later, things absolutely changed when Billy overheard his parents talking in the kitchen. “I worry that down the line something will show up. He’ll start forgetting things.” said Mama. “He already forgets things,” said Papa. “He’s a seven-year-old boy.” “You know what I mean,” said Mama. She paused. “Or he’ll be confused at school. Or…” That was all Billy heard. That was when he started to worry. He didn’t tell anyone that he was worried.

Can you imagine how hard it was for a seven-year-old kid to be under such pressure? But as the name of the book “The Year of Billy Miller”, Billy made it. He tried his best and did a great job in second grade with the help of his family and Ms. Silver, his teacher.

I’d say I love this story so much. Meanwhile, I want to say more about Billy’s adorable teacher, Ms. Silver and what she did for her students including Billy.

As a teacher with over 20-year teaching experience, I’ve learned a lot from Ms. Silver.

During the summer vacation, Ms Silver sent a letter to her second grade students, in which she told them she was looking forward to spending “a safe, happy year of growth” and “a wonderful, joyful, exciting challenge” with her students. She told everyone they would study colors and habitats and the world of names in the Year of the Rabbit according to the Chinese.

Wow, it was such a nice letter that Billy’s Papa said he’d rather be in second grade. And Papa also said, “This is the year of Billy Miller.”

Then Billy and Ned started their second grade together. For the first day at school, Billy noticed Ms. Silver’s two shiny red chopsticks which were used to coil her hair into a bun. Billy couldn’t help whispering “Chop, chop” as he filed past Ms. Silver. Although she seemed to hear nothing and smiled to everyone, Billy felt a little bit guilty and had an idea of how to make things right with Ms. Silver.

Guess what gifts Billy prepared for her. He gathered a nickel, a dime, a quarter, a paper clip, a safety pin, a nail and a rabbit. All these things were silver in color. However, it was not easy to give them to Ms. Silver without others’ attention. Billy couldn’t concentrate on schoolwork-habitat while Ms. Silver was walking through her students and saying, “Share your thoughts about habitats. Draw where you’d like to live if you were an animal.” He wondered how to place all the silver things on Ms. Silver’s desk unnoticed.

When the bell rang, Billy refused to go outside with Ned, he just chose to scramble around on the floor in the classroom.

“Do you need help?” Ms. Silver asked in a private voice. “Are you a bat? Is that your cave? Come out of your cave, bat.” “Are you feeling Okay? Is there anything you want to tell me?” asked Ms. Silver with patience. In fact, Billy tried to nod, but his head and neck felt glued in place. He finally wriggled his hand into his pocket and pulled out his silver things. “Here,” he said. “These are silver like your name.” Billy inclined his head shyly and softened his voice to a whisper, “I’m really a nice person.” “I can tell you’re a nice person, a very nice person.” said Ms. Silver.

Whoa, wow, I was deeply moved by this scene. How lovely Billy was! How loving Ms. Silver was! I’d love to be a teacher like her to be patient with my students.

What happened next? Billy worked diligently to make his diorama turn out. Even if he had some difficulty with the flying bat and grew frustrated, he succeeded with his Papa’s help in the end. When it was his turn, he shook his diorama to demonstrate how his bat could fly, and he described his habitat, explaining confidently how he’d used glitter to look like mica. When Ms. Silver said the glitter was a nice touch and nodded approval, Billy connected his eyes with hers and felt proud.

Now, you see, all students try their best to do great schoolwork and hope to be complimented by their teachers, right? It’s true that a teacher’s positive comments and encouragement in time seem extremely important to kids.

Shortly afterwards, Billy treasured the pearl and the empty envelope with a real dragon stamp on it, he even didn’t want his sister Sal to touch it because they were given by Ms. Silver.

For the end of the year, Ms. Silver wanted her students to do a show of poems. All students should write a poem about a family or someone who helps their family like a good friend. And they would read their poem with the person on the stage.

Billy didn’t know whom to choose because he didn’t want to make his Papa feel bad if he chose to write about Mama. Knowing Billy’s problem, Papa advised Billy to write about Mama. Of course, writing a good poem wasn’t that easy. But he made it through talking with Mama to know more things about her. Here’s Billy’s beautiful poem.

Quiet Mom

by Billy Miller

My mom likes a lot

She likes quiet best

Quiet can be loud if you listen

It sounds like this

cars

sprinklers

bugs

wind

dogs

Quiet is a dead bird

There was no doubt Ms. Silver gave Billy’s poem a smiley face.

Before they had the show, Ms. Silver repeated, “Read slowly. Read loudly. Read with expression.” And she also prepared extra copies of each poem for her students as well. She emphasized it would be a no-worries show. If they forgot the words, they could have the copy to read.

To be honest, Ms. Silver was such a considerate teacher that she never pushed her students hard. She expected the kids to be relaxed.

You know, Billy practiced a lot to recite his poem so well, he figured he would still be able to say it by heart when he was ninety because he badly wanted to give Mama a surprise. However, he was too nervous to remember a word including the title. Luckily, Mama took a copy for him and Billy finally read it in a big, loud and wide voice that seemed to bounce beyond the walls of school, reaching to the world outside, to the moon. Everyone clapped. Everything was back to normal.

Billy ended the show by exclaiming a voice meant just for Mama in front of the silent microphone, “This is the Year of Billy Miller.”

Yes, this is the Year of Billy Miller as his Papa ever said.

From this book, I am aware that we should make lots of efforts to become understanding, considerate, patient, wise and adorable parents and teachers to help our kids to grow up healthily and happily.

Wish each child a happy and unforgettable childhood without any worries!
