Probably not. People have an extra tainted view of him now because of his time with the grizz, but his contract wasn't bad for his level of play on the Mavs.

It’s very easy to retroactively analyze decisions, but there once was a time when we all thought Dwight + Nash + Kobe was an overpowered surefire Finals team. I also thought the Warriors were nuts for refusing to trade Klay for K Love.

Of course, this doesn’t apply universally. Everyone knew Mozgov and Deng were shitty contracts from the jump.

OP's headline is misleading. The story doesn't say anything about how this was "just to piss off Cuban", it talks about how good a fit Dirk would be in Houston. Marc Stein reported that the Lakers offered Dirk a max deal, too.

Dirk was still good in 2014. He was coming off a year where he averaged 21.7 ppg on over 60% TS in 33 mpg. He didn't quite hit 50/40/90, but .497/.398/.899 is damn close (gets there if you round). His PER was his highest since 07-08. There were legitimate reasons to give him a max, especially when it was set pre-cap spike but would last into the years after it. Morey legitimately wanted him.

But he was 36 at the end if 2014. A max contract for a player that old is a bad idea to begin with, even for a player of Dirk's caliber. Granted, you're getting a guy who's is still productive and a great shooter, but you're digging yourself into a hole for 3-4 years
