圣诞节快到了，又到了送礼物的季节了。英语里把礼物叫gift，有时叫present，这两个词我们都不陌生，但你知道两者之间有什么区别吗？

实际上，gift和present源自不同的语言(language families)。

Present源自法语，意思是“提交、提供、赠送”。A present是赠送或授予的东西。

从13世纪开始，这两个词都表示不要求支付，一件东西的所有权转移了。(possession undergoing a transfer)(possession undergoing a transfer)。

Gift的用法更广。可以指天赋，比如你生来就能说话，或者有音乐天赋。约翰f肯尼迪。

但是present通常不会这样使用。这个词表达的意思更具体化了。

Gift还可以用作定语名词来修饰另一个名词。

礼品店叫什么？A gift shop。给职员装礼物的篮子是什么？A gift basket。Present不应该这样修饰其他名词。我们常说的gift boxes、gift cards和gift wrap不能称为present boxes、present cards和present wrap

但是这两个“礼物”中哪个更常用？
