From Snapchatting to sending emails, it seems like we are always on our phones. And while your parents' or grandparents' generations may disapprove of your smartphone "addiction", there are some positive aspects of using the Internet. One of them is online friendships. With the popularity of technology among teens, it's understandable that more and more often people are connecting online. It's easy to find girls (or guys) with similar interests as you. Some people feel embarrassed to admit that they have very real online friendships. But it's not something to be ashamed of and a friendship should not be discounted because it was formed online.

When chatting face-to-face, you might be afraid of being judged by the other person. Communicating online can sometimes help take away that fear. For people with anxiety or who are very shy, this provides a safe way for them to have open discussions with others. If they don't feel safe, or feel embarrassed, they can easily log off or block the person they were speaking with. Another great thing about online friendships is that it connects us with people and cultures that we may not have otherwise come in contact (联系) with. You can be sitting on your computer chair in Baltimore but the person you're speaking to could be in London. That is seriously cool when you stop and think about it!

However, that isn't to say there aren't dangers to online friendships. The fact is that there are bad people online just as there are in real life. You should never give out your full name or address to a person. And be aware — some people may come off as completely harmless, but if you have a strange feeling about them, trust your gut (感觉). Most of all, do not meet someone from online alone. There are countless heartbreaking stories to be told of people who have done this, and ended up hurt or even worse.

On September 10, Lincoln Center hosted a unique class of star musicians: Kids and teens. The young players are part of the World Peace Orchestra, or WPO. The group held its first Music for Peace concert in New York City, with 134 students from more than 60 countries taking part. Musicians were selected from all over the world, including conflict areas.

Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey introduced the orchestra and spoke about the concert's theme. "Tonight we will see and hear evidence that while countries may go to war it is culture that unites us," Spacey said.

The WPO is a nonprofit group which brings kids together using the common language of music. To be considered for the orchestra, students first had to be recommended by their teachers and then audition (面试) online for judges. Once chosen, professional musicians and teachers then worked with the players to improve their skills.

Some of the young musicians play classical instruments, such as violins. Others play instruments unique to their home country. For example, Arnold Mugo, 16, from Kenya, plays an instrument called the djembé. "I can't express how I felt when I learned I had been selected for the orchestra. I was rolling on the floor," Mugo says. "It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."

Mugo says his favorite part of the WPO is making new friends from around the world. "I hope that I take part of their culture home with me so I understand them more," Mugo says.

WPO spokesperson Scott Noppe-Brandon says the goal is for students to use the lessons learned from the orchestra to encourage other young people. "Regardless of what country you're from, regardless of your age, race, or background," he says, "music plays a role in all our lives."

A city in Denmark is about to become the first in the world to provide most of its citizens with fresh water using only the energy created from household wastewater.

The Marselisborg Wastewater Treatment Plant in Aarhus has undergone improvements that mean it can now generate more than 150 percent of the electricity needed to run the plant, which means the surplus can be used to pump drinking water around the city.

As well as regularly powering the entire water system of 200,000 people living in the inner city area, any unwanted electricity could be sold into the local grid (电网).

The plant generates energy from the biogas (生物气) it creates out of household wastewater. Carbon is removed from the wastewater and pumped into digesters kept at 38°C filled with bacteria. These produce biogas — mostly methane — that is then burned to make heat and electricity.

Upgrading the facilities in Marselisborg required nearly €3 million, but Aarhus Water expects that to be recovered in just five years.

Other cities in Denmark, including Copenhagen, have been trying to copy the example of Aarhus.

When talking about copying Denmark's experience, Molly Walton, energy analyst at International Energy Agency, says, scientists and engineers have a long way to go to improve energy efficiency, and it requires a big investment (投资) that could considerably increase the price of the water.

Moreover, to work, the wastewater plant needs to be big enough to generate enough biogas, and even the wastewater has to be the right mix — if it's diluted (稀释) by much storm or groundwater it will be almost impossible to recover energy, Walton says.

With rising global temperatures, more energy will be needed to provide fresh water from other sources such as seawater. The city's action may not solve the problems, but it is a big step in the right direction.

Good evening, everyone. My name is Louise Bright. I've worked as a sportswear designer for a big store for four years now, but I haven't always worked in fashion. When I left school, I worked as a secretary for a couple of years, and then became a bank clerk before getting a job in a travel agency. But I always dreamt about working in fashion.

So, when I was 25, I went to college and did a four-year course there. You don't learn how to actually make clothes until the second year — the first year is spent looking back at the fashions of the past. In the third year, you work in a big store, looking at clothes made by all the famous fashion names.

I enjoyed the last year of the course most, because each student designs seven sets of clothes for the final fashion show. Some designed casual clothes; some liked children's wear. The things I designed were all sports clothes.

I was lucky to get work as a fashion designer as soon as I'd finished college. A few students from my course were offered work by really famous fashion designers, but I was offered work by the store I'd worked for as a student. In fact, most of the other students on my course aren't designing at all — they're working in advertising. I really love my work.
