The COP moved along the street，looking strong and important。

This was the way he always moved .

一位警官沿着街道巡逻，他看起来强壮又威严。

“没什么，警官，”他说。“我只是在等一个朋友。二十年前我们约定今晚在此见面。听起来有点不寻常，对吧？那我就详细地解释给你听，如果你想确保没什么问题。二十年前在这家商店的位置本来是一家饭店。‘大乔伊’布雷迪饭店。”

“那个饭店五年前搬走了。”那个警察说。

门前的那个男人长着一张方脸，面无血色，但是眼睛却很有神，右眼旁有一小块白色的疤痕。

他领带上缀着一块大宝石。

“二十年前的这天晚上，”他说，“我和吉米·威尔斯在这里吃晚饭。他是我最好的朋友，也是世界上最好的人。我们一同在纽约这儿长大，亲如兄弟。那年我十八岁，吉米二十岁。第二天早上我就要出发到西部去了。我打算找份工作，挣大钱。但是吉米不愿离开纽约。他以为世界上就只有纽约这一个地方。

“那天晚上我们约定二十年后再在此地见面。我们觉得二十年后我们就能清楚自己是什么样的人，未来的发展也可以确定了。”

故事背景：

19世纪末20世纪初期的美国，处于资本主义飞速发展阶段，出现了资本集中和无产阶级的贫困化，同时，中小资产阶级的破产及失业大军的不断扩大，使美国社会的阶级矛盾不断尖锐化和表面化。

1862年，美国林肯总统在《宅地法》中规定，任何公民只需交15美元的证件费，便可在美国西部得到一块相当于160英亩的土地；在这块土地上连续耕作五年以上就可成为这块土地的主人，这一措施民主地解决了独立战争期间的土地问题，同时激发了美国人勤劳创业、发财的热情。这时的人们纯朴、勤劳、勇敢，充满活力和生气，他们彼此重义气、讲交情，尽管他们在对付满腔怒火的印第安人时也干尽了野蛮的掠夺、杀戮等强盗行径，正如在西部文学作品中所看到的那样。但也许是远离城市，西部资产阶级内部尚未染上唯利是图、尔虞我诈的恶习，或者说为对付险恶的自然环境他们尚未顾及内部的倾轧和吞并。

正是在这样的时代背景下，广大民众对美国的“民主”社会产生了怀疑和失望。他们曾经为消灭蓄奴制的战争流过血，以为消灭了蓄奴制的美国是世界上最先进的民主国家。但事实上，美国不但没有成为“人人享有民主、自由、幸福权利”的天堂，而且成了世界上贫富鸿沟最深的国家之一。在那里，一方面是一小部分卑鄙龌龊沉溺于奢侈生活的亿万富翁，另一方面是千百万永远在饥饿线上挣扎的劳苦大众。社会生活的发展变化，对美国文学产生了深刻的影响
