致青春:EMC公司37年历史回顾(1/2)

周二写了一个帖子，探讨EMC XtremIO停止开发的可行性。周三我看EMC官微写了一个澄清的帖子。其实，西瓜哥的影响力真的没有那么大，我看一下文章的阅读数不到3000。我知道每种架构都有其优缺点，没有完美的架构，看你如何抉择了，停不停都会有充足的理由。其实辟谣最直接的不是说XtremIO卖得好，不会停。而是应该针对XtremIO架构的问题，提出解决方案和路标。最简单的就是告诉用户什么时候支持大容量SSD，不只是新建，包括现在部署的XtremIO扩容时也最好可以支持15TB大容量的SSD，支持未来向全闪存数据中心演进，这样谣言就不攻自破了。

其实客户考虑主要还是成本问题。如果XtremIO不尽快支持大容量SSD，性价比就很难和HP 3PAR 8450（虽然还不支持压缩）和NetApp ALL FLASH FAS（重删压缩都支持）竞争。我刚才看来一下某咨询公司的数据，2016Q1，在中国区，XtremIO已经被HP 3PAR 8450超过，已经不是市场第一了。

其实从公司的历史去看，一个产品架构总是有其历史周期的。比如原来Symmetrix DMX也卖得很好，但2009年EMC还是切换到VMAX架构，CPU从Power PC切换到X86，从紧耦合走向松耦合，解决了DMX的扩展性问题同时降低了成本。虽然也还叫Symmetrix，其实架构已经改得面目全非了。XtremIO的架构，如果要往下走，也必然会不断演进，但架构改变太多，那时候叫不叫XtremIO，那个只是宣传问题。比如现在EMC的中端为了体现其是全新的架构，叫Unity，故意不继承VNX的命名，也是为了宣传的需要。这个也反映了EMC的Marketing还是非常厉害的，高端看品牌和稳定性，因此不管架构如何变，一直都叫Symmetrix系列。但中端追求创新，因此名字就经常变化。

说到这，我突然想起EMC马上10月份就要被合并了，变成DELL-EMC了。是时候回顾一下EMC历史的时候了。

我刚学存储的时候，特别想学习存储的历史，想从历史中感悟存储发展的一些规律。可是没有找到比较好的材料，因此入门费了很多时间。鉴于EMC在业界的地位，从1979年创立到2016年被DELL收购，37年的光辉岁月，足以反映外部存储市场产业从无到有，从盛到衰的历史轨迹。

Richard J. Egan and Roger Marino Found EMC Corporation

EMC is founded by Richard J. Egan and Roger Marino in Newton, Massachusetts.

1979年，EMC在美国马萨诸塞州成立。EMC其实是EMC⊃2;，即EMCC，前面EM是两个创始人名字的首字母，后面的CC是第三和第四创始人名字的首字母。2002年，EMC把它解读为爱因斯坦的著名公式E=MC⊃2;，此是后话。

1990年，以色列人，高端存储之父Moshe Yanai带领的研发团队推出了Symmetrix 4200（那个时候高端存储容量才24G），EMC的辉煌从此开启。Symmetrix采用RAID和Cache技术，大幅降低了系统成本同时提高系统的性能，这经典的设计现代存储系统一直还在采用。

还有一件大事EMC里程碑里面居然没有提，就是当年EMC收购了Data General，获得了CLARiiON中端存储产品，进入中端存储领域。（网上有新闻说是2002年收购不准确，应该是2009年收购，但整合需要些时间。西瓜哥2000年在河南移动做项目是第一次使用CLARiiON系统，那个时候没有看到EMC的logo，而是MOTOROLA OEM DG的产品。那个时候磁盘都需要初始化，因此第一天划分RAID后只能回去休息，需要花一晚上的时间才能初始化完成，印象深刻）

2009年，比较遗憾，EMC其中一个创始人过世（即其中的E）。但同年，EMC成立了VCE联盟，收购了Data Domian，推出全新高端存储VMAX架构。并且，时隔20多年之后，重新拥抱固态存储，在高端存储引入SSD（OEM STEC），并且推出FAST（自动分层）软件实现自动化管理。
