If you were born in 2000 or sometime after it, then something akin to your life's story is going to hit big screens across China on Sept 3.
Sometime in 2006, Zhang Tongdao began recording the lives of a dozen children born after 2000 from kindergarten. It ultimately zeroed in on the lives of two characters in the film, a boy named Chi Yiyang and a girl named Rourou. Both were born in 2001 and went to the same kindergarten.
Not unexpectedly, "growth" as we children of this millennium know it, too shows up in the 89-minute documentary that delicately compresses 12 years of their growing-up period, from the time they were five till the time they turned 17.
Chi was the epitome of the rebellious youth. He wanted to be a hero from a very young age and was very naughty.
He was always hitting other kids. So parents of other kids in the kindergarten asked the kindergarten owner, Li Yueer, to expel him.
But Li Yueer stood by Chi. "I think Chi is a good role model for other boys," she said.
The challenge lay in making Chi disciplined and good-mannered.
The documentary's director, Zhang Tongdao, explained why he wanted to show the movie to a nationwide audience. "I hoped that after watching it,people would understand the most important factors that can change a child in a 12-year growing period."
Years later, rugby brought in that stability to Chi's life.
"I now feel that those who protect others are heroes, too," a more matured Chi later told Yu Ming, executive director of the documentary.
"I used to be the forward on the football field, but I'm now a baseliner and must protect my team."
Though they went to the same kindergarten, they had very different lives.
Rourou's mother always dressed her up like a princess. And like other princesses in Disney stories, she, too, experiences difficulties while growing up. She was isolated by her friends.
She encountered difficulties learning mathematics and shed tears when learning them.
Math sums are like poisonous snakes in the forest.
"She has to get out tonight!I don't want to see her anymore. "
And they are growing up in an era that witnessed China's rapid economic development.
Watch the documentary, then you will realize how foolish it is to look down upon the coming generation merely because we, at older ages, look more experienced. They are much more stronger than we imagined.
